If you are serious about the health of your eyes, then you should make sure that you see your optical doctor on a regular basis. Making sure that you have regular optical exam, for example your yearly exam for glaucoma, will go a long way towards insuring that you keep your vision. Open angle glaucoma affects more than 80 percent of the people that contract glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye disease that can be cured if found in the early stages.

There are other types of glaucoma but open angle is the one that affects the eyesight of most people. The sad fact is that there are more than 3 million Americans who have glaucoma but are not aware of it yet, based on statistical research. Glaucoma works by damaging the optic nerve through pressure in the eye or decreasing the blood supply to the optic nerve. If it is caught early enough by scheduling eye exams, then glaucoma can be arrested, and a person’s vision can be saved. However, any damage that glaucoma has caused up to that point is not fixable. The people who are most at risk of contracting glaucoma are black people, people over 40, or anyone that has a history of glaucoma in their family.

Anyone who discovers that they have contracted open angle glaucoma will be happy to know that they have a good chance of saving their vision. Once glaucoma is discovered doctors can stop it in its tracks. As long as a person has not waited until their vision is so bad that they cannot see well, they will be able to recover from glaucoma. If you are having your regular visits to your doctor, then you should be safe and not have anything to worry about. Additionally, if you feel there are any eye problems, then you should immediately make an appointment with your optical doctor.

Even though having health issues is not something anybody wants, it does happen to people. Glaucoma is one of the most common types of disease that can affect the eyes, and open angle glaucoma is the most common of the group. This disease is the most common and the most treatable, yet at the same time, it is the one that causes the most cases of blindness.

Narrow angle glaucoma is a rare form of glaucoma and comes on rapidly. It usually constitutes a trip to the emergency room. The sudden pressure that is created in the eye causes intense pain. This type of glaucoma is hard to ignore, so the person who contracts it has a better chance of saving their vision as they will need to be seen by a doctor immediately.

Glaucoma is a term given to a group of different eye diseases that affect many people in the world today. Glaucoma is the number one cause of blindness in the world and narrow angle is the rarest type. The only good part about contracting it is that it is hard to ignore. Normally, glaucoma is not realized by the patient because there are no symptoms. This is bad because if it is not diagnosed by a doctor it can cause a lot of damage and eventually blindness. However, narrow angle comes on suddenly and causes intense pain. However, this type of glaucoma is a serious condition and if not treated immediately, it has the possibility of causing blindness in three to five days. Most of the time the symptoms are not able to be ignored because there are so painful, so those afflicted will seek treatment.

Narrow angle glaucoma is extremely rare but it is extremely serious. Anyone who contracts this type of glaucoma will know immediately that they are having eye problems. The symptoms for this type of glaucoma come on very quickly and are very extreme. The symptoms include extreme pain and inflammation, high-pressure in the eye, seeing halos around lights, vomiting, blurred vision and extreme sensitivity to light. Narrow angle can be brought about by a few different things such as a hit in the eye, bad eye structure, certain medications and diabetes. If treatment is not commenced immediately, then eyesight could be lost as quickly as three to five days. This disease comes on quickly and severely and can do extreme damage in a short amount of time if not arrested. The optical surgeon will treat this type of glaucoma with a type of laser surgery called laser iridotomy. The surgeon will create a hole in the iris with the use of the laser in order to let fluid flow to the front part of the eye. Once this has been done, the pressure will be relieved and vision will be saved.

If you contract narrow angle glaucoma, then it will be very hard to not know it. The symptoms that come with this type of eye disease are very painful and very severe. They will cause the patient to immediately contact an optical professional for treatment. Once treatment has begun, the rate of success is high for saving vision.

Eye diseases are a topic that can be found in health news just about every day. Nobody wants to have trouble with their eyesight but it happens to people all the time. You can try to keep your overall health in tiptop shape but sometimes it doesn’t matter what you do, you still get sick.

There’s so many diseases that can affect the eyes that it is hard to keep track of them all. Luckily, there are trained professionals, such as eye doctors, who are specialized in this area. Sometimes eye problems can happen due to eyestrain or a person not taking care of their eyes correctly, yet there are others who are genetically predisposed. Open angle glaucoma and angle closure glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye, pink eye and eye infections are some of the many things that can affect just about anyone. Some diseases are curable and some are not. There are some that can be stopped in their tracks and stopped from advancing, and there are some diseases that can be reversed totally. If you are having any type of eye trouble, then you need to have an eye exam and determine what your specific condition is. Once determined by an eye specialist, you will gain the knowledge of how to take care of whatever eye health issue you have.

Glaucoma and cataracts are two very serious types of eye diseases. These are the two main diseases that come to mind for most people when they think about diseases having to do with the eyes. While not every eye disease that you can contract is serious and can cause blindness, some can be very annoying and irritating. The good news is that with regular eye exams and taking care of your health, any disease or infection can usually be eradicated totally in a short matter of time. There are some eye problems that cannot be taken care of quickly or easily, and early detection is the key to having the best results. If you’re going to need to have any type of surgery on your eyes, then you’ll want to know that as early as possible, so the surgery can be successful.

No one ever wants to get sick, and especially no one ever wants to contract any eye diseases. However, it can happen to any of us. Make sure that you get regular exams, both for your body and for your eyes. Medical advances are such these days that if any problem is detected early, then a doctor should be able to correct it.

Many don’t consider all their eyes do for them, until they are in need of help. With all they see and take in daily, it’s an endless collection of information and data.. However, what many fail to ’see’ is the need for great care. The caring for the eyes is so specific; they have medical experts who are designated solely to keeping them well. Many just take our eyes and their vision for granted. Vision isn’t just something you have; it is in fact more of a gift. Millions of people have had to learn life changing skills due to losing their sight. Often times, this is something that can be prevented. With the right knowledge and attitude, you too can have long lasting healthy eyes and enjoyable sight.

Understanding what it is you can do to protect your eyes is a valuable tool. Wearing protective eye wear for example is as sensible, as wearing steel toe boots on a work site. When you are dealing with materials and things that can ultimately cause harm, even if it seems minimal risk, it’s always wisest to ensure their best chance.

If you have a child, you know that being in a car accident won’t happen every time you get in to the car, yet, you buckle your kids securely for the off chance something may bring them harm. Your eyes deserve the same attention. Knowing what you can do to protect them, and making them a part of your regular routine, will greatly improve the chances of your eyes being well.

One of the things you should consider is the use of good sunglass. Sunglass with a UV protective barrier is essential. Just as your skin can be harmed by the UV rays, your eyes are also being exposed to these damaging rays. Not all sunglasses are equal. Make sure they have the label on them, stating they are protected from the UV rays. If in doubt about which sunglasses to buy, talk to your optician, he can recommend something for you and your family that will keep your baby blues sparkling and healthy.

Another thing to consider is the use of protective eye wear when doing activities involving tools. Even a lawn mower can spit up debris and can cause irreparable harm to your eyes. A simple pair of safely glasses can be a great way to keep your eyes healthy.

Something simple to do for your eyes is make sure you give them time to rest. Reading, watching t.v., and time on your computer can cause strain and fatigue to your eyes. Giving them periodic rest periods is wise. Don’t sit too close to the screen, make sure the light isn’t causing a glare or strain on your eyes.

Finally, one good thing you can do to ensure your eyes are healthy is by having your eyes checked regularly. If there are problems with your eyes, early diagnosis can prevent later prognosis.

Just a few simple things you can do to keep your eyes seeing as they should; will be the best thing you can do for your eyes.
Your eyes are working for you, do what you can for them.
Kim Cruea

Today more and more people are choosing Lasik Surgery as an option for improving their eyesight. This may be a good option for you; but it’s always best to know your options, the risks, and anything else that might help you make this decision.

When considering your Lasik Surgery procedures here are some things to consider;

There is time needed for recovery-pain is a typical occurrence. Most cases are mild to moderate pain. This is often controlled by prescription pain medications in some cases.

The time you take to recover, may leave you with blurry vision; this can take a few days in some cases. In older individuals, you may still need your glasses for a few days after surgery while you heal.

It may be good to know that it’s not always successful. Sometimes, the procedure doesn’t work and you could regress back to the state you were before the surgery. In this case it’s good to know your chances before proceeding.

Not a permanent fix; sometimes it lasts only for a time period. As we get older the need to wear glasses or contact lenses may return. Those over 40 will likely have this occur.

What should I do?

Talk to you doctor; this is a good place to start. Make sure he/she informs you of all that it entails. Don’t be sold on a sales pitch; you want a doctor who is going to benefit you, not look at you as the next payment on his car.

Research your options. Knowledge is power-so it is said-you can feel better when you weigh the facts. Get some concrete literature on the process, what it entails, anything that will give you a clear and unbiased and informative view of the procedure and what you as the patient can expect.

Talk to people; if you have questions, it may be of help to talk to people who’ve had it done. Get some feedback. Not all cases will be the same, so keep that in mind. It is however, a good idea to know the facts, whether they’re good or bad.

Overall, the Lasik surgery process appears to be helping many people annually see things more clearly. Although it’s not for everyone, if it’s something you are thinking about, get informed before you make the leap. Be sure to ask questions even if they seem silly. Your best source of information is your doctor, don’t be shy when asking questions, this is your sight, and it’s in his/her hands. You have the right to know.

Talk to your doctor and do your research, then you will have a better idea of your options before you take this step in sight improvement.

Regular eye exams are important even for people who are not having eye trouble. These are in-depth routines that are normally performed by either an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist. How often a person needs an eye exam hinges on a number of elements including age, overall health and whether or not eye disorders run in the family.

Kids with no eye trouble need only have their eyes checked out during regular visits to their pediatrician. This evaluation is ordinarily referred as a vision screening and ought happen at a minimum, every 2 years. A vision screening isn’t as across-the-board as an eye exam, but it is priceless in noticing early signs of eye/vision trouble.

For grownups without eye trouble, eyes ought be tested once between the ages of 20-29, twice during the next 10 years, 2-4 times during the next 10 years and after age 65, eyes should be examined once every 1-2 years. People wearing corrective lenses should have their eyes tested annually. Those with eye disorders should work out an testing schedule with their eye doctors.

What is involved in an eye exam

Employing a light source, an external examination ascertains that the eyes ‘look’ right. You will follow the doctor’s pen (or other object) with your eyes to ensure the eye muscles function properly. Whilst you read the illuminated chart with letters that get smaller the further down you go, your doctor is checking out your visual acuity. If you need corrective lenses, you’ll get a refractive appraisal, a test that determines how light wave bend. The outcomes of these tests help the doctor decide your prescription. He may put a Phoroptor, a device that resembles a big black mask, over your eyes in order to fine-tune these measurings.

Your peripheral vision will be screened. A slit lamp exam uses a microscope that emits a sharp ray of light to evaluate the cornea, lens and iris. The back of the eye is also analysed and lastly your eyes will be tested for glaucoma.

Differences between the eye care specialists.

Ophthalmologist vs. Optometrist

The duties and skills of an Ophthalmologist and an Optometrist are generally different, all the same just about most people erroneously use these terms interchangeably. Both professions involve eye care nonetheless the primary difference between the two is the presence of a medical degree. It’s this degree that denominates an Ophthalmologist as a medical doctor who’s been trained in all areas of eye care including the power to diagnose and care for eye disorders and diseases.

Ophthalmologists are qualified to perform eye surgery and they likewise know how to conduct proper eye measurements so they can precisely prescribe corrective lenses. Their training helps them administer advice for preventing blindness and also enables them to attend to those who are blind. In addition to advanced educational training, Ophthalmologists must be trained in clinical and surgical settings.

Optometrists routinely perform eye tests. During such eye examinations, Optometrists will also find out the need for, fit and prescribe corrective eyewear and/or lenses. Optometrists can likewise screen patients for certain eye disorders.

Contacts lenses and children

There’s no age restriction on contact lenses for kids. In fact, even very young children can wear them and many do for a variety of reasons. How can one decide whether contact lenses for kids make sense? Like any decision, it’s important to consider the benefits against the disadvantages.

Contact lenses for kids make sense for the same reasons they do for adults. They help enhance appearance, they are comfortable to wear and they are a good choice for improving vision. Add to these reasons the facts that fitting a child isn’t an issue and that children have all the same options as adults including daily wear, extended wear, continuous wear and disposable and it’s difficult to argue against contact lenses for kids.

Kids who participate in sports find that wearing contact lenses is much easier than dealing with the hassle involved in wearing eyeglasses. Eyeglasses and sports aren’t always a good match. They break more frequently and replacing children’s eyeglasses isn’t cheap!

Kids can be cruel, and children who wear eyeglasses find that they’re frequently subjected to unnecessary taunting and name-calling. Such behavior can seriously impact a child’s self-esteem and confidence, especially when they’re young and don’t know how to disregard the words being said.

Studies have shown that contact lenses for kids, in particular rigid gas permeable styles, have the added benefit of helping to keep nearsightedness from progressing.

There is something else to consider before making a final decision, however. Although a child’s age isn’t necessarily a consideration, a parent may wish to consider a child’s maturity level. With the decision to wear contact lenses comes an understanding that the wearer has certain responsibilities that must be upheld. Since no two children mature at the same pace, a parent really is the only person who can make this determination.

It helps to think about the ways in which the child does or does not currently show responsibility. For example, how is the child at caring for pets, or at finishing chores or at completing school assignments?

If a child isn’t yet mature enough to handle the responsibility, the parent then has to determine whether he or she is willing to take responsibility for cleaning, maintenance, insertion and removal of the contact lenses and also for scheduling eye examinations and follow-up visits as necessary.

If a child is mature and is motivated, that child likely will be a good candidate. And since most children take instruction well, especially when someone other than a parent gives it, they generally are very good at wearing and caring for contact lenses as they’ve been instructed by the eye doctor.

Contact lenses for kids do present the same risks as adults have including a higher incidence of eye infection, dryness or abrasion. Some children, even though they may be very motivated, are not good candidates for wearing contact lenses either.

As always when in doubt, talk the decision over with someone who has experience prescribing contact lenses for kids.

Eye Care – Conjunctivitis

What is Conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is an eye problem in which the conjunctiva, which is the mucous membrane that covers the eyelid and the white part of both eyes, becomes inflamed. There are two main types of Conjunctivitis, or pink eye as it is more commonly referred to. The first results from a bacterial or viral infection and the other results from an allergic reaction.

The infective form of Conjunctivitis, if it’s caused by bacteria, is highly contagious with the hands being the primary vehicle for transmission. Conjunctivitis that results from an allergic reaction is typically a seasonal condition as are most allergies.

Conjunctivitis can also result when a person is sensitive to certain facial products and cosmetics. This latter form is sometimes referred to as irritant Conjunctivitis. Allergic and irritant Conjunctivitis are not contagious.

Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

The symptoms of the infective form of Conjunctivitis include discharge that is watery or sticky, eyes that water and feel gritty, and eyes that feel as if they have been glued together upon waking. Mild soreness is sometimes a symptom. The part of the eye that is normally white will also become red or pink, which is why Conjunctivitis has earned the nickname ‘pink eye’. Because Conjunctivitis often develops along with a common cold, a person may also have symptoms of a cold including runny nose, mild fever and a sore throat.

With the allergic form of Conjunctivitis, eyes are itchy and the eyelids may appear puffy. There may also be a discharge from the eyes that appears white or watery or ropy.

Who is at risk?

Anyone is at risk of getting Conjunctivitis. Because it can be contagious, a person with Conjunctivitis needs to take measures not to spread it. It’s difficult because it is normal to rub the infected eye as a way of providing temporary relief. However, if hands are not washed afterwards and the cause is bacterial, the bacteria can be transferred to another individual by coming into contact with the infected hands.

People who have a history of allergies, particularly hay fever, are at increased risk of developing the allergic form of conjunctivitis.

Early detection/treatment

Infective Conjunctivitis with its notable pink eye often will accompany a common cold making this eye problem rather easy to identify. Likewise a person with known allergies knows whether or not he has allergic Conjunctivitis.

Treatment for infective Conjunctivitis that is caused by bacteria includes the application of antibiotic ointment or antibiotic drops. If it is caused by a virus, typically the condition is left to heal on its own, much like a cold. Generally however, it is difficult to determine whether infective Conjunctivitis has resulted from bacteria or a virus so oftentimes, no treatment is prescribed.

In either case it is important to wash hands after coming into contact with the infected eyes using warm water and soap. Those with infective Conjunctivitis should not share their towels or pillows with others. Also when Conjunctivitis is present, contact lenses should not be worn until it has cleared.
